Spider veins are damaged, visible blood vessels just beneath the skin’s surface that are red, blue or purple and have a “web-like” appearance.
What is it?
Spider veins can emerge in clusters that mirror the patterns of spider webs or tree branches. These veins can appear anywhere, but they are most commonly found on the legs, feet or face. While they are harmless, spider veins may trigger swelling and a sensation of heaviness in the affected areas. Spider veins are more prevalent in women than men and seem to run in families. They are particularly common in people who sit or stand for extended periods, pregnant women, and obese individuals due to restricted blood flow.
Spider veins occur when the valves inside your veins become weakened. Factors such as sun exposure, hormonal changes, a history of vein surgery, excessive exposure to ultraviolet rays, or an injury can also contribute to their development.
There are instances where spider veins might indicate a more serious health issue known as chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). Our board-certified skin specialists at Dermatology Partners can help determine if you are at risk of developing CVI. We can also provide aesthetic treatments for those who are bothered by the look of spider veins.
How is it treated?
Although spider veins are generally not dangerous, some patients do not like how they look. Our dermatology clinic can enhance the look of spider veins through laser therapy, injection procedures, and sclerotherapy. These are all less invasive alternatives.
