Actinic Keratosis

A rough, scaly patch, bump or reddish spot on areas of the skin often exposed to the sun, such as the face, ears, neck, hands and forearms.

What is it?

Actinic Keratosis, also known as solar keratosis, is a common skin condition we treat at our Dermatology Partners offices. This skin condition arises due to extended exposure to the sun, tanning beds or sunlamps, resulting in precancerous skin growths that manifest as red, pink or brown spots on the skin's surface. These spots typically appear on sun-exposed areas of the face, lips, ears, neck, hands, arms and shoulders. Actinic keratosis, most often affects adults due to long-term exposure to ultraviolet light. You can reduce your chance of developing actinic keratosis by minimizing your sun exposure and safeguarding your skin from UV rays. Although we understand the appeal of the sun, it can be harmful. Sun damage can accumulate throughout the year, even during the colder months. It's important to apply SPF 30+ sunscreen and limit your time under those damaging rays. Our medical practices in Avon, Sandusky, Broadview Heights, Medina, Port Clinton, and Strongsville, Ohio have years of experience treating this condition, ensuring the health and well-being of our patients.

How is it treated?

If not properly addressed, actinic keratoses can potentially evolve into a type of skin cancer known as squamous cell carcinoma. Our board-certified dermatologists at Dermatology Partners are dedicated to assessing any concerning areas on your skin and ensuring you receive swift, safe treatment. We often eliminate these growths using a chilling procedure, therapeutic creams, gels or cryotherapy. Don't hesitate to book an appointment at our Avon, Sandusky, Broadview Heights, Medina, Port Clinton, or Strongsville office if you spot a new or changing area on your skin.
