Psoriasis is a chronic, noncontagious auto-immune skin disease characterized by patches of abnormal red, pink or purple skin and dry, itchy skin.
What is it?
Psoriasis is an auto-immune skin condition that leads to an accelerated multiplication of skin cells, resulting in skin inflammation. It's not contagious, so it can't be transmitted from one person to another. Typically, those with psoriasis have inflamed, red skin patches adorned with thick, silver-white scales. These patches are often itchy, causing a burning sensation and discomfort. The skin around these patches typically feels dry and may crack and bleed. Stiff, swollen joints can also be a common symptom. The symptoms can vary greatly and go through cycles that may last for a few days to several weeks. Psoriasis is generally a chronic condition.
At our dermatology clinic, our board-certified dermatologists offer comprehensive treatment for psoriasis, catering to all skin types across Avon, Sandusky, Broadview Heights, Medina, Port Clinton and Strongsville, Ohio.
How is it treated?
While a complete cure is yet to be discovered, our highly qualified dermatologists can assist in managing your psoriasis with surface treatments like corticosteroids and oral retinoids to keep symptoms in check and tolerable. Our dermatologist may also suggest remedies like salicylic acid, coal tar, retinoids, or even something as straightforward as aloe vera. In certain instances, our team will advocate and administer light/phototherapy to alleviate symptoms. For more severe scenarios, Dermatology Partners can prescribe oral or injectable medications to help subdue your immune system.
